"Standard Laoran" is a language-by-contract, an archaic form of Old Laoran codified in a similar fashion to other dead liturgical languages (similar conceptually to Latin in our world) and taught in the high-school-equivalent levels of school as part of an international treaty for the benefit of commerce and diplomacy. It isn't, however, a living language as it is no one's native language. It's primary descendant Ulliaran is similar to the relationship between Latin and Italian, with sound changes and noticeable grammar changes resulting in a language reminiscent but distinctly different.
