De Saint-Exupéry's Le petit prince should be out of copyright in Germany this year (author's death + 70 years: 1944 + 70 = 2014). I am currently working on translating the first few chapters of it into my conlang, and the illustrations of course go closely hand-in-hand with the text. Can I legally scan the respective illustrations from the book, or is that potentially Problematic?

Long story short: the author died during WW2, so no. An extra 30 years applies to the original French copyright. (Also, it was in July, so even then, you'd have to wait a few months.)

For the record …
<Rhetorica> except
<Rhetorica> http://thelittleprince.com/
<Rhetorica> there is an Estate
<Rhetorica> with an Agenda
<guitarplayer> welp
<guitarplayer> in that case
<guitarplayer> i will keep this to myself and not publish
<Rhetorica> it is not that i want to shut you down
<Rhetorica> it is that a web-aware estate is an ugly thing
<Rhetorica> with many rows of teeth
<Rhetorica> and it would not do well to become entangled
<guitarplayer> i know
<guitarplayer> cf. tolkien
<guitarplayer> and i don't want trouble with overprotective estates
<Rhetorica> exactly.

So, there won't be an Ayeri translation of the first 2 chapters of "Le petit prince", because of our Almighty and Supreme Lord, Copyright.

Give it time... in a century or two, perhaps, copylefted works will show their real value in providing windows onto history where others do not.

The history books may be written by the victors... but only with the source material they have access to!

bversion is what subversives do on the rare occasion that they do not have root

Upon realising this, we were all enlightened.

Ah, copyright... I chose Machiavelli's 'The Prince' to avoid such thing.

True—you could just print it at a smaller size.

But no, really, I'm translating 'The Prince' into Hellesan. I wanted a short, interesting, well-known and non-copyright work, and I chose Machiavelli's.

It definitely seems like the sort of thing they'd invent and value.

Knock, knock... If you're not going to do The Little Prince, Jipí, were you considering any other significant texts? You haven't mentioned anything else on Benung about these plans. (Although I know you're already tied down with your current Semester O' Hell.)

Nothing planned, and yes, I shouldn't really allow myself time for conlanging for the rest of the year cause there's enough brain work to do for university already as it is.
