Now I'm really curious as to why some of the cities on that map were picked as the "capitals". Many, like Olympia, Des Moines, and Santa Fe, make sense; they're already capitals. But Elyria? Seriously?

I'm not seeing Elyria on there? Cleveland seems to be the capital of the Firelands (Ragnaros would not be pleased).

You have to find the original version to see the detail. Underlined cities are capitals; neither Cleveland nor Toledo are capitals. (Nor, for that matter, is Chicago.)

Probably mimicking actual administrative division capitals, which are fairly frequently not the powerhouse city of the locale. Think California or Washington.

A while back I attempted to redraw the US's states by making Voronoi maps around its fifty biggest metro areas. Here was the result:

(Hawai'i is part of San Fransisco; Alaska part of Seattle.)

That... actually looks better than 95% of the redraw-the-states maps I've seen. Math is always the answer!

It would be interesting to see the very same map but extended to the whole globe.

Unfortunately, the page that I used to make that is having a random 502 error at the moment. We'll try later.

Would be interesting to see a probable electoral college map for that setup. I feel like we'd have a lot more swing states, because every single state would be guaranteed to have a major metro area as well as, in most cases, a large hinterland. Would Minneapolis still be a Democratic stronghold now that it's swallowed up most of the Dakotas? Would the various states of Texas still be under GOP lockdown?

[EDIT: I also wonder if you could do congressional districts this way- although it would be a stretch for mega-cities like New York that have more than one district within their borders.]

[EDIT: Works...I tried making a map for Canada's ten biggest metro areas. Three provinces are headquartered in south-eastern Ontario, of course.]

Alas, only with country capitals, not with the 160 or so most populated cities AFAIK

of course it has been done

No, no. I mean the same map above but extended (prolonging the borders as they are shown) to the whole globe.

Here's a map of the world, if only its twenty largest metro areas were capitals:

Africa, if only the largest city in each country were a capital:

Exactly. That would mean Europe (or most of it) under Bostonian administration, I guess?
