Gods and Religion
Notes on the Gods as they relate to human religion, as opposed to their position in the Divine Order
Anthologica Universe Atlas / Universes / Vana Gloria / Random Stuffs / Gods and Religion

The gods embody concepts that do not easily line up with human concerns.  Even apparently abstract concepts such as time, love or justice are frequently divided between two or more deities.

The concepts embodied by the fourteen gods are:

Kinesis - motion
Metamorphosis - change
Crisis - conflict, suddenness
Anthesis - expansion, outwardness
Genesis - creation
Nemesis - destruction
Synthesis - joining, interaction
Telesis - individuality
Analysis - division
Ascesis - contraction, inwardness
Physis - collectivity, organization
Noesis - (re)distribution
Gnosis - perception
Stasis - stillness

Common Human Themes

Love
Anthesis and Synthesis are both associated with love generally.  Genesis is often seen as a goddess of sex and erotic love.  Telesis is the god of homage and vassalage and by extension god of love of one's lord.  Physis is god of friendship and brotherhood.

Fertility
Strictly Genesis is the "goddess of fertility", but Anthesis (associated with the sun and harvest), Synthesis (love and sex) or Noesis (harvest) also have associations with fertility (see also Sex below).

Sex
Just about all the gods have been associated with sex at some point, because humans.  Most usually it is associated with Synthesis, Anthesis or Genesis, but also with Crisis (Quixotic sexuality), Telesis (Sanchoic sexuality) or Gnosis (Dulcineaic sexuality).

Disease and Healing
Analysis is generally seen as the god of healing and medicine.  However healing magic is controlled by Anthesis and Ascesis and preventative medicine falls under Stasis.  Crisis and Nemesis are both associated with disease and accidents, but also with fighting disease.

Justice and Judgement
Noesis is the goddess of distributive and reparative justice, and Nemesis the goddess of retributive justice.  Kinesis is frequently associated with justice as king of the gods.  Judgement is associated with Ascesis and Gnosis.

Death
Analysis is a psycopompic god of death.  Crisis is associated with sudden death.  Both Kinesis and Stasis are associated with death as the inevitable fate of mortal beings.  Nemesis is generally not associated with normally occurring "death" from which the Name survives, but with absolute annihilation.

Pregnancy and Childbirth
Synthesis and Genesis are associated with conception, Anthesis and Genesis with pregnancy, and Analysis with childbirth itself.

War
Crisis is the general war god.  Anthesis and Ascesis are both associated with defensive warfare.  Physis and Noesis are associated with military organization as a subset of societal organization.  Nemesis can be associated with war.

Weather and Landscape
No gods are inherently associated with landscape (e.g. mountains, deserts, seas, forests, rivers) or weather phenomena (e.g. storms, rain, wind, clouds, rainbows, drought).  Landscape and weather are mere "accidents of matter" and not pure reflections of Ideals.  Nevertheless various Vanans cultures have made different associations between gods and such phenomena, often strongly influenced by local conditions.

Revelry
Anthesis and Telesis are associated with joy, revelry and feasting.

Art and Craft
Synthesis and Genesis are the goddesses of art and craft.  Gnosis is associated with craftsmen and skilled labourers.  Metamorphosis is associated with processes involving change such as metalworking, pottery, glassmaking etc.

Magic
All the gods have dominion over particular forms of magic, but Metamorphosis is the most general god of magic and magical learning.  However, the source of mana, the stuff of thaumaturgical magic, is acknowledged to be the fallen goddess Hubris.

Knowledge, Learning and Wisdom
Learning, wisdom and contemplation are associated with Ascesis and Gnosis.  Logic and rational deduction are associated with Analysis.

Speech and Language
Language is often associated with Ascesis as the god of scribes and recording information.  Synthesis is the goddess of language in its use to interact or convey a message.  Kinesis and Metamorphosis are associated with speech as a form of command, Anthesis and Genesis with speech as a form of expression.  Physis and Analysis are associated with grammar and the correct forms of language.

Relationships Between the Gods

Intrinsically there are seven dual relationships, usually of opposing concepts.  Four of these are  "true" oppositions, and three "partial".

Kinesis - Stasis (true)
Metamorphosis - Noesis (partial)
Crisis - Gnosis (partial)
Anthesis - Ascesis (true)
Genesis - Nemesis (true)
Synthesis - Analysis (true)
Telesis - Physis (partial)

Kinesis, Anthesis and Telesis
Anthesis is often portrayed as the consort of Kinesis, and Telesis their son.  Sometimes Noesis is added as a daughter.

Genesis and Nemesis
Genesis and Nemesis are often considered twins, or at least sisters.  Because they are frequently both considered taboo their spheres of influence are attributed to other gods, usually Anthesis and/or Synthesis for Genesis and Crisis and/or Analysis for Nemesis.
