The Order Necrotica

The Order Necrotica has one of the stranger histories on Maikros. It can be traced back to two groups - the Samanteans, and Ancient Prophan necromancers. These necromancers carried the name of the Order Necrotica,+Ancient Prophan: TAΓMA NEKPOTIKA and lived in the city-state of Bodoron. However, in 1:722, Bodoron lost a war against Satremia, and fearing misunderstanding and execution at the hands of the Satremians, the Order fled through the Underworld. While the entire Order didn't make it intact, they eventually found their way towards a great concentration of power. There they found other necromancers going about their work, dark-skinned people the Prophan Order had never seen before. These were Samanteans. The Samanteans cautiously took in these refugees, and eventually, the language barrier was broken, the Order could relate their story, and the Samanteans were sympathetic to it. For almost eighty years, the Order Necrotica lived in the Samant. Both groups had some knowledge to offer to the other, and so both grew from this interaction. The Order, however, never fully integrated into Samantean society, expecting to return home to Propha at some point. This all changed when an alliance of various Jamic states and nomads invaded the Samant and won. Once again, the Order Necrotica fled persecution through the underworld, and this time they brought many Samanteans - both necromancers and otherwise - with them. They underwent another arduous journey through the Underworld, opening portals in various places, trying to find somewhere to settle down and start anew. The fledgling Konurese Empire, though it had much cultural influence from the Samanteans, was taken off guard when this party appeared seemingly out of nowhere, and did not welcome them. They tried various islands of the Dotted Ocean, each time being rejected by the natives, until they found one that was uninhabited. It was not the best land, hardly suitable for agriculture, but they now called it home - and called it Nekros, after the Prophan word for the dead, both because of the profession of the Samantean nobles and the Order, and to honour those who died in the Jamic invasion and on the journey through the Underworld.

Over time, they consolidated their power and built a city on this island, and took over some neighbouring islands - some of which had prior inhabitants - to set up their own agricultural practices. The Prophan and Samantean populations intermarried and merged, at least in the upper echelons of society, and so did their language. The Necrotican language is thus a Samanto-Jamic language with heavy lexical influence from Prophan.

The current Order Necrotica, due to its history, has given itself the mission to show the world that necromancers are not all raving, homicidal lunatics and can actually be a force for good. In this, one of their primary objectives is the elimination of all rogue necromancers, which are necromancers who did not go through the rigorous willpower training regimens outlined by the Order prior to actual necromantic training, or who have succumbed to the whispers of the darkness spirits despite such training. However, they are so strict in this that they basically consider any necromancer outside of their hierarchy to be rogue - even those employed by the Black Cloaks, who have their own willpower training regimen for potential necromancers that they claim to be just as good. The results appear to agree with this claim, but the Order stubbornly does not buy it.

The Order operates across the world, despite being banned in both the Talurmen Empire and the Trade Union of Toletska & Valimaa - in both of those states, the Order operates in secret. This secrecy also extends to most of those Toletskan and Valiman states currently not under the dominion of the Trade Union, as many of these states do not trust the Order, just as they do not trust any necromancer. Furthermore, while these states are independent, the Trade Union still frequently has some measure of influence. The primary place where the Order can operate in the open is Salenzis. Antiem, Giel, Gallar, Upper and Lower Jilneas, Propha, the Ports Union, Naldus, Anshacras, and Xenas, have, by treaty, all allowed the Order Necrotica to be the only mage guild to legally practice necromancy within their borders. Onyxia is not a signatory of this treaty because the Order practices a different religion, and Igion, due to the influence of the Sublime Goddess, only allows the Order to practice necromancy outside of the Igionese capitol, Fluwlidiwli. Zarcos, of course, does not permit the Order to operate in its borders, seeing as the Order consists of mages. Zarcos' ban on magic also means exceedingly few rogue necromancers in its borders, meaning the Order only keeps token espionage on Zarcos. The Order has no presence within Shorrag, due to general Shorragite suspicion of the Order, and the Shorragite practice of magic being different enough from that of humans for there to be no necromancy as the Order understands it in Shorrag.

Due to its almost worldwide influence, the population of Nekros Island itself - that is, much of the membership of the Order - is quite diverse, having people from all over the Eastern Continent, as well as some Salenzians. There are, however, quite few Toletskans or Valimans, as the Black Cloaks receive the vast majority of people of such description wanting to be necromancers.
