Alignment
There are three person-marking slots on the verb: agent, patient, and secondary patient, glossed D.
When the verb has one argument, this argument can be either A or P: A for voluntary actions and P for involuntary.
Erlgòsow.
er-lgòs-ow
PST-fall-C1.A.SG
"He intentionally fell down."
Erlgòsón.
er-lgòs-nʷ
PST-fall-C1.P.SG
"He accidentally fell down."
When the verb has two arguments, the split is primary/secondary patient and encodes whether the object of the action was affected by it — so in the sentence "I read the book", "book" would be secondary patient unless I, for example, took margin notes. But sometimes this acts like the Finnish telicity distinction: (class 2 is the noun class for most animals, so 'animal' is implicit)
Ercagtow.
er-cag-t-ow
PST-shoot-C2.P.SG-C1.A.SG
"He shot the animal."
Ercagtʼow.
er-cag-tʼ-ow
PST-shoot-C2.D.SG-C1.A.SG
"He shot at the animal [and missed]."
When the verb has three arguments, there's no split: the agent is always the agent, the patient is always the patient, and the third argument (dative, benefactive, locative, whatever) is always the secondary patient.
Reflexives are intransitive, why not. (cf. Rotokas) (Should they govern middle/process voice? Probably not, but they do in Rotokas.)
