Maja are very similar to terrestrial humans, having almost completely the same organs, the same height and weight range, and a somewhat similar range of skin colour. There are, however, a few major differences - three of which will be discussed here.

One of these is gamete control, which lets a maja better control their reproduction. This ability is also known to exist in the close evolutionary relatives of maja. It appears that their more advanced decision-making capabilities were required before this ability could evolve, as more distantly-related species show no sign of it. Some, however, postulate the reverse - that better decision-making came about as a consequence of gamete control, allowing animals to better choose the right situation in which to reproduce, while those animals that chose poorly were selected against.

The second is that maja have a wider range of hair and eye colours than do terrestrial humans. Unlike gamete control, this is a purely maja phenomenon, which probably came about as a side-effect of the expansion of powers in proto-maja and was retained in the species, since it provided easier identification at a distance of what power an individual had - each variety of power carries its own characteristic hair and eye colour.

The third and most notable is their powers of metaparticle control. A maja has a special kind of gland in various places throughout the body. These glands store metaparticles for later use. The metaparticles enter the glands via the bloodstream - these metaparticles are mostly gained from metaparticle-bearing food and drink,1 though it is also known that maja - and other powered animals - can more slowly replenish their metaparticles over time through breathing, as the air usually contains a certain amount of metaparticles that have happened to not yet collide with a molecule of gas. This is also how plants, such as the kaloi tree, gain their metaparticles.

Once in the glands, however, metaparticles do not re-enter the bloodstream - when they are further conveyed through the body, they do so along special pathways that follow the nervous system, and are indeed similar to nerves. Being connected to the nervous system, they can be directed by the brain to exit the body at various points to produce various effects triggered by informational nerve signals to the metaparticles. This is how any animal's powers work. However, maja have evolved a remarkable diversity of powers - three of which actually arose within recorded history. Each power type is genetically encoded, so what kind of power a maja has is set for life. Furthermore, there are people with two power types. This is, however, rare.

The maja power types are:

Fire - Pretty straightforward in effect, as fire powers usually are in any fiction. Fire powers require flammable material to work right - the oxygen in the air usually suffices. Its associated eye/hair colour is red.+Proper red, not the orange we call red hair.

Water - Shoots water around and controls water from a distance. Its associated eye/hair colour is blue.

Rock - Created rock usually sticks to the user until dissipated, which can be used as a blunt instrument. Otherwise, stone and earth can be manipulated, though not thrown about. Its associated eye/hair colour is brown.

Wind - Control of air. Notably, this also applies to the air in the lungs. Wind maja can be exceptional singers because of this. Its associated eye/hair colour is beige.

Electric - Pretty much. Its associated eye/hair colour is yellow/light blonde.

Plant - Usually expressed by growing plants from the exit points of the metaparticles - usually the hands. Can also control extant plants, though not from a distance. Its associated eye/hair colour is green.

Light - Reading lights, raves, lasers. Its associated eye/hair colour is gold/dark blonde.

Dark - The weirdest of the powers. Has sometimes been described as a lack of power, because most dark maja can't seem to do anything of consequence with metaparticles. Close examination, however, has revealed that dark powers have something to do with entropy. Its associated eye/hair colour is black.

Psychic - Telekinesis. This is achieved by entangling pairs of metaparticles and sending half of them out into the desired object. Control of the ones still within the maja prevents the others from converting into other matter, and then provides spatial control of the object once the released entangled half of the metaparticles is in the object. This is actually how all powers that allow control from a distance work, but psychics have the most refined and varied control. Putting entangled metaparticles into another person's brain allows telepathic communication. Teleportation can also be achieved if entangled metaparticles are sent to some location. Its associated eye/hair colour is pink.

Physical - Physical maja don't actually send metaparticles out - they keep them within and use them to enhance their other abilities. So basically, they can punch really hard. Its associated eye/hair colour is variable within the black/brown range.

Ice - One of the three powers that arose in recorded history. It arose on Iglisa, the cold northern continent of Tol Maja. It is derived from water powers, and allows the maja to control and create ice in a similar way to how rock maja work. Its associated eye/hair colour is cyan.

Metal - One of the three powers that arose in recorded history. It arose after the widespread adoption of metallurgy. It is derived from rock powers, and works similarly. In combat, metal maja are known to turn their hands into blades or mauls. Its associated eye/hair colour is gray.

Energy - One of the three powers that arose in recorded history. Very odd in that the metaparticles don't actually turn into anything. Energy maja just shoot them at things, and that's about it. Its associated eye/hair colour is orange.

1. These days, usually the kaloi fruit or its juice. The fruit can retain its metaparticles for days if stored properly, while the juice on its own can only do so for a few hours before the metaparticles begin to turn into more juice. This has led to home and workplace juicing as the most common way to get powered (=metaparticle-bearing) kaloi juice. Meats of powered animals don't contain metaparticles in significant enough amounts, though some cultures past and present make a habit of eating metaparticle glands. This has many times been raw, soon after the animal's death, which of course carries dangers along with the benefits of metaparticle replenishment. These days, such cultures usually utilize special cooking and storage techniques to allow the metaparticles' noninteraction with living organic matter to continue unimpeded.
