So, I have this landmass here. The gray bits, if you're somehow confused. I've also got a little 2km guide down there in the left corner. I have absolutely no idea how I can figure out the area of this landmass in km. Can anyone tell me what this area would be and/or how to go about figuring it out?

Easiest way is probably convert it to greyscale then get a script to return the percentages of colors. Then just see how tall and wide the image is by that 2km bar, and do a little multiplication. I'm too tired to try it right now (I don't have the script handy), might see about it tomorrow tho.

Hell it might even work without converting it.

The bar is about 43.6 pixels wide, or 21.8 px/km. Binarizing the image at a level of 229 (about half way between the water/land luminosities) gives 1011711 white pixels. That leaves us with 2128.84 km² of land.

stoichiometry, bitches

Rhet: I suppose you did that with imagemagick somehow? Or how else did you do it?

EDIT: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25174231/how-how-to-count-the-number-of-black-and-white-pixels-linux-imagemagik-etc has some suggestions how to do that.

This this this

I ran into the imagick method while working that out and while it would work, why would you put yourself through using that???

BTW, is this in Photoshop Elements?

Probably! If you're using Photoshop Elements you're almost certainly a hobo at a public library! No one else knows!

I get the feeling sometimes that I'm about the only person (who isn't an antipiracy nut or open source eugenicist) that doesn't have an installation of photoshop somewhere.

Adobe released an old version of Photoshop (and old versions of some other stuff, but unfortunately not Flash — you still have to blackbeard that) for free a while back, so.

Me neither. But I'm a goddamned Luddite, so...

I had it before, but not anymore, since I don't have Windows right now because I couldn't get my Windows (XP) image to run in Virtual Box anymore for some reason (likely the fact that XP is past its ultimate best-before date?) after my last OS reinstall/upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04.

Photoshop Elements is, IIRC, more than good enough for map-making- Zomp's old maps used it, although I don't know about his newer ones (like the Historical Atlas of Arcél).

Now, whether you know enough about how to use it- that is a different story. (I have no tablet, but in any case can barely use Elements or GIMP to save my life...)

This is why those things known as "learning" and "practice" exist.

In principle, MS Paint is adequate for mapping—all one truly needs is the ability to set RGB values of pixels individually, and the rest is one form or another of laziness. (cue+or do i mean queue jokes about butterflies, magnets, xkcd being funny, and so forth) That doesn't mean it won't be anguish or yield hideous results, though.
