Extant Naisylvan literature extends back to the Age of Strife, but fragmented records exist of an extensive literary tradition long before that. Most texts older than the Age of Strife were systematically destroyed sometime during the Great Wars. A few surviving works from the Great Wars period indicate that older literature was purged due to some sort of regime change, lending credence to the Monoimperial theory.

Early literature during the Great Wars and the widespread conflicts afterward is marked by prevalent martial themes and visceral, evocative imagery. The genre of sweeping Kinaeld (War-song) novels is the oldest recognizable type of modern-era Naisylvan literature. Chief among the Kinaeld epics is the Soder Varung (Dark Blue Banner) cycle, a twelve-book saga charting the exploits of a minor Sylvan lord who gathered a powerful fleet and conquered a large swath of the Golden Strand. The Pol Nerama (Eight Sisters) cycle is another well-known Kinaeld epic, following eight queens who warred over the coastline and islands of what is now Gedvianna Province.

As the traditional Naisylvan states settled somewhat, the prevailing styles became more introspective and contemplative. This is considered a golden era for Naisylvan literature. Kranser Nef (Self Journey) stories rose to popularity in Veryiin, telling detailed stories of personal trials and growth. The eastern Ashlands saw the rise of Trina Mallerans (Study Tales), stories which explored scientific and philosophical concepts through extended parables and fictional illustration. The western Ashlands and Veryiin also saw an explosion of scientific literature in various fields as development branched off from the work done for military purposes.
