I would like people who know to help with making a list of the """Standard""" reference grammars of various languages. I would like to have this information so that I can put them in the... the thing. Obviously I'm not talking about the "best" grammars, but rather the most "authoritative" ones, the ones that are cited as being THE grammar, etc. This'll partly overlap with the thread about grammars that don't dick you around, but I'd prefer to have these separate, esp. since you may know of some examples even if you haven't read them. Knowing what the "standard" reference is is usually pretty easy if you've studied a language, but if you haven't it can be hard to tell which one is the The grammar, so I only know of a few. If we can identify all the The grammars for all the "major" languages then we can... the thing.

These're the ones I know:

Classical Mongolian: (Russian or French?) Grammar of Written Mongolian, by Nicholas Poppe, 1937. English translation: 1974.
Latin: Allen and Greenough's New Latin Grammar by Greenough, Kittredge, Howard, & d'Ooge, 1903.
Syriac: (German) Compendious Syriac Grammar by Theodor Nöldeke, 1880. English translation: 1904.

Mandarin: Mandarin Chinese: A Functional Reference Grammar by Charles N. Li and Sandra A. Thompson, 1981
Hausa: The Hausa Language by Paul Newman, 2000.
Sanskrit: Sanskrit Grammar by William Dwight Whitney, 1889.
Attic Greek: Greek Grammar by Herbert Weir Smyth, 1920.

There are others; I'll edit them in later.
