Phonology
Anthologica Universe Atlas / Universes / Karch's scrap pile / Wayiptsan / Wayipcye / Phonology

Wayipcye had a rather strange phonology consisting of either 12 consonants and 3 vowels or 10 consonants and 9 vowels, depending if you count the semivowels as parts of the vowel or as stand-alone consonants.

Consonants

/p t ts k/ <p t c k>
/b d dz g/ <b d z g>
/m n/ <m n>
(/w j/) <w y>

The semivowels only occurred before vowels, hence their questionable status.

Vowels

/ɨ ə a/ <i e a>

Allophony

The rules mostly seemed to affect vowels.
/ɨ ə a/ surfaced as [u o ɔ] after /w/ and as [i e ɛ] after /j/. The sequences /tsj dzj tj dj/ surfaced as [ʧ ʤ tʲ dʲ] and the sequences /kw gw pw bw mw/ surfaced as labialized consonants. The semivowel /j/ then disappeared after /k g/ and the semivowel /w/ then disappeared after alveolars.
The name of the language (/wajɨptsjə/) was thus pronounced [wɔjipʧe].
