There are several sounds that only occur word-initially due to lenition. These are ∅ <ḥ>, ∅ʷ <wh> - the last two contrast with word-initial glottal stop. The last phoneme occurs only before /a/ and surfaces as brief rounding of the vowel - /∅ʷa/ is thus pronounced [ɒ̯a].
