Thangaith has an unusual phonology resulting from distinctive sound changes, the most visible being lenition of unvoiced stops and the subsequent devoicing of voiced stops.

Geminated consonants often occur in the onset of stressed syllables. The long equivalents of /β θ s ɕ/ are [bβ tθ ts tɕ] <bw dt ds xx>.
The retroflexes occur only in numerous Poneamndrieng and Mhra loans.
