The phoneme inventory of Jabhag is rather typical of the [???] sprachbund with its lack of nasals and sibilant fricatives, and while the presence of only one approximant is rather unusual, it's shared with neighbouring [langname] and [langname2]. The vowel inventory, however, is unusually large for the area.

There's suprasegmental nasalization, which affects the whole syllable - voiced stops become nasals, vowels are nasalized, and syllable-final voiceless stops are sometimes released nasally.
Voiced stops also lenite intervocalically and before voiceless stops, the result being [β ɾ ɽ j ɣ]. This lenition is usually blocked in nasal contexts except when said stop is retroflex.
There are also some stress shenanigans - stress can be on the heaviest syllable in the word, if there are two or more syllables with the same weight, it can occur on any of them.

From now on, Jabhag will be written phonetically in a modified version of Americanist transcription - vowel nasalization is marked with an ogonek, unless there's a voiced stop in the syllable, in which case it's written as a nasal. Lenition is marked - [β ɾ ɽ j ɣ] <v r ṛ y ɣ> (Retroflexion is of course marked with an underdot).

Syllable structure

The maximal syllable structure is CVC. All consonants can occur both in the onset and in the coda. Double consonants are common intervocalically and are pronounced as geminates.
