quoting KathAveara:
Why're the plus notes on the right-hand side of the posts?

Because... that's the alternative. Fixing their positions. Silly.

I think I may have another tweak that would disrupt the text of the page less; trying...

...okay, new style option. Try this out. Fake alt status messages, like back in the day. I've used this style before, for glosses in a random sentence generator. It worked out pretty well there.

I guess the most practical interpretation would be: "if you just need to make a quick remark, use a plus note; but if it's longer or the reader might want to click/select something in the remark, definitely use a footnote."1

So how're you meant to hover over plus notes inside plus notes?

As of now, those'll need to be switched to footnotes containing plus notes. Use plus notes for things like glosses of rare words; keep it simple. This way the text flow is less disrupted.

Would it be gratuitously obnoxious to ask that custom footnote markers be allowed, à la

It's tricky to do, but possible—if you can come up with a real reason for it.

so we can use the awesome † ‡ in addition to * for footnotes?

I just grabbed the Pound sign as a random distinctive character.

Numbers. We have numbers. You are writing a fancy-schmancy pseudo-academic article, not a label on a ketchup bottle.

Um, the place I've seen those used most is in fact in fancy-schmancy academic articles (in addition to numbers, even).

Yeah, they seem to frequently crop up in front-matter stuff of scientific papers, like after the names of the researchers.

Certainly, but you don't need those here! However, due to a fun and exciting bug, if you make two footnotes the same they merge.1 Well, sort of. They use the same symbol.1 Sometime soon I'll add the stupid O(n²) check that removes actual duplicate footnotes.

1. I suppose I should start remembering the formatting of more academic articles and books from the last 10-20 years versus 30-40+years ago.

For whom did inline notes not work on their mobile device, because they used to work just fine on my Android device, and now they suck compared to before. Actually nested inline notes worked just fine, well even, before on my Android device and now they are atrocious.

Instead of turning them off for mobile users in general, you should allow users to electively turn them off in their board preferences.

We shouldn't be making things worse just because one person complains.

Oh I see you completely changed the inline notes... I can't say I like these better than how they were before...

CSS just isn't fancy enough to lay out a tooltip correctly. Anything at the far left gets really squashed. I preferred the way they were before, too, but it just isn't practical.

There should be a way of making comments on other people's work. Right now all there is are the discussion pages and those are for contributor use only. I find this quite suboptimal.

I mean perhaps the idea is that you can make threads for that but so far it mostly seems that people use either one or the other. Probably because it feels stupid to post things twice. Even if one of the postings is just a repository upload (and of course you'd have to edit in two places).

That'll be fixed with The Notes Update. Once I get back to that, everything will be magical and different. Instead of having separated forums and read-only books, each wiki section will be a giant nested thread that the contributors highlight articles from. It'll be a lot like how people share stuff now on the forums, only with better organization and a "presentable" view that just shows an index and the key content posts, much like the current way chapters are presented.
