When I edit dictionary entries I see a new category now, 'reverse terms'. In some cases you can find there the same words entered on 'definition', put in a column. Sometimes the full definition, sometimes not. There are cases when that doesn't happen and the category box appears empty.

This is... sort of a feature I forgot to mention; as the name implies, it's meant to be an index of your language sorted by words in the language used for definitions, so you can have a two-way bilingual dictionary. It will be auto-populated if your definition starts with single words separated by commas, semicolons, or periods.

Here's Lilitika's, for comparison: http://memory.rhetori.ca/?id=310&mode=reverse

The key and unique benefit is that you can enter multiple words here on different lines, and the word will show up under multiple headwords in the reverse view. Handy if your native language is full of common synonyms, or if you want to clarify that a concept maps unevenly onto near-synonyms in your native language. The definition is shown in the reverse view to (hopefully) make it easier to see at a glance when word relationships might be asymmetric.

If you click the link to view entries without reverse keywords (e.g. for pre-Perà), you'll be shown a UI that will help you in identifying the words that have definitions that are unparseable. This feature is not compatible with the importer's mass-overwrite feature (as that currently deletes entries entirely) but the importer can include reverse keywords with new entries.

Avatar problems
Every time I try to upload an avatar I recieve an error message. What should I do?
And yes, it's still impossible to write to Rhetorica.

Hello warbear, welcome to Anthologica (Annie, for friends).

Queen Rhetorica seems to have disappeared for a few days, so I suggest you to be patient. I had problems to upload avatar images in the past, and the problem I had is that I tried to upload .png images that were a little too heavy, it seems. If you were trying to upload a .png image, I suggest you to upload the same image but in .jpg format.

If that isn't the problem, or you still have problems uploading the avatar, I suggest you to wait a little more!

I'm aware of this issue, but sorting it out means triggering a whole bunch of cascading updates, a little like pulling a Jenga block out of the bottom of a very tall and precarious tower. The lesson: never install OpenSuse for any reason.

Not that I have ever had the slightest idea of what OpenSuse is. What do I do to upload my avatar?

For now, the best way is probably to use Gravatar while the issue is being worked on.

Now I realize that dictionaries arrange entries this way:

A
B
C
...
a
b
c
...

So in a double alphabetical order, giving priority to words beginning with upper case.

Is that how things have been working since the first day? Just wondering. No problem with that.

I think so. It might be worth it to make the collation configurable... Whether I can do that depends on how hardcoded that is into the PHP part of the site, though.

When trying to upload an avatar, I get the following error:

Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Class 'Imagick' not found in /home/web/cadre/extensions/images.php:31 Stack trace: #0 /home/web/cadre/octavia.php(3018): file_crop(Array) #1 /home/web/cadre/octavia.php(644): Octavia->procman('User Profile (m...', Array) #2 /home/web/cadre/octavia.php(490): Octavia->executive('file_crop($fn, ...', false, 'User Profile (m...') #3 /home/web/cadre/octavia.php(3139): Octavia->begin(false, '\r\n\t[file_crop($...', 'User Profile (m...') #4 /home/web/cadre/octavia.php(1566): Octavia->procman('User Profile (m...', Array) #5 /home/web/cadre/octavia.php(644): Octavia->procman('User Profile (m...', Array) #6 /home/web/cadre/octavia.php(490): Octavia->executive('\r\n$fn = {/avata...', Array, 'User Profile (m...') #7 /home/web/cadre/superheader.php(611): Octavia->begin(Array, '\r\n[\r\n$fn = {/av...', 'User Profile (m...') #8 /home/web/cadre/interface/index.star(126): showpage(Array, 'picture_submit', true, '', NULL, Array) #9 /home/web/atlas/index.star(3): include_once('/home/web/cadre...') #10 {main} t in /home/web/cadre/extensions/images.php on line 31

Here's the avatar in question:

Jeffro-avatar-smol-V-stra-II.png

This is a throwaway edit because the image wouldn't show up the last time I edited this post, and I think whenever I edit the post I get a version that's one edit behind.

Dun dun dun.
Avatars and thumbnails are now fixed. Some Ctrl-F5ing may be needed to forcibly clear your browser's cache before thumbnails will appear properly.

Caveat post scripti: Gravatars are dead.

Also, a bug I just remembered: Words beginning with certain characters are not shown in dictionary overviews. I *think* it applies to non-ascii characters when the latin alphabet is used, but the concrete example of this I have is words beginning with <ñ-> in the Old Inggirian Dictionary. I was trying to debug this at some point but without a local annie my best guess is that it's a problem with the code used to perform the db lookup for dictionaries.

Sorry, do you mean to say the word starts with the character LATIN SMALL LETTER N WITH TILDE, or literally LESS-THAN SIGN? The former does indeed sound like a mess, but the latter might be deliberately mutilated (or amputated) as part of how the dictionary templates manage homonyms—typically in the format headword<!>integer.

EDIT: You were not talking about the stupid thing and were, in fact, talking about words that start with ñ. There's nothing specific in my code that discriminates against non-ascii text that I know of. However, there are headwords in Lilitika that start with Latin-1 characters, and to reply to this comment from Izo:

...the Lilitika dictionary does not do this, either. So I'm thinking maybe the site started using a binary collation order in the Annie db, against my wishes.

is there a way to add css to a cell in a table (for example, adding a border around it or changing the background color) when that cell also has the rowspan/colspan feature in use? i have tried various combinations and i can't get any to work. (this is for languages, not the forum btw)

...This is of course way too late, but when you use [td| ... ] in WF, the ... can be any attributes that would normally go on a <td> tag. So [td|rowspan=2 colspan=2 style="border: 5px red solid; background: blue; color: black"] is totally viable. Just remember to set both background and foreground colours, so it looks OK on both light and dark themes of the site. (Also remember for borders in tables you may need to argue with border-collapse to get them to show through the site's default CSS.)

In the Eleutean lexicon's main page, words beginning in a stressed vowel (like àver) don't appear, nor suffixes beginning with an en dash (–). If I rewrite them with a hyphen (-), no problemo.
