did i ever tell y'all about how i managed to break my crunchbang install to the point where X uninstalled itself? i needed a version of transmission that wasn't literally years old because blah blah torrent feature technobabble, and this particular feature had only been added after the fucking clinton administration so naturally none of the repos had it. i went 'whatever', enabled the repo that had it, and bam, unresolvable cascade of dependency issues. transmission uninstalled gimp, reinstalling gimp uninstalled firefox, reinstalling firefox uninstalled a bunch of other shit, and this went on until X got wiped and i switched to archbang. which was a great OS until the arch devs reorganized everything for no reason and made it impossible to update without similar unresolvable cascades that, well, before i gave up on it i was reinstalling it every few days

1) Packages are much more likely to be up-to-date in pacman. Ubuntu and Debian are notorious for leaving very old versions of things in their repos; a lot of programs tell you to manually install things from their own sites instead of getting them from the aptitude repos, which totally goes against the point of having a package manager.
2) Between the official Arch repos and the AUR (pacman only deals with the official repos, but there's a pacman clone for the AUR... what did they replace yaourt with? packer?)... in the entire time I used Arch/Archbang, there was only one thing I had to install that wasn't in either the official repos or the AUR, and that was a font. Ubuntu has jack shit in its repos.
3) The syntax is slightly less annoying.
The downside of this is that Arch doesn't explicitly worry about stability like Ubuntu does, but in practice that's not too much of a problem.

This. So much this. I mean, what's the point of having a package system if you're not going to be running the right version of things...
But I do like KDE. I can't say I've had that much difficulty with Kubuntu... most of my problems were my own idiocy.
Also that sounds like Miekko. He fought the good fight, running ever-decaying and breaking KDE3-continuing repos, for the longest time. I can't recall what he's using now.
I don't like all the default silver/blue bling of KDE4 either, so this is what I ended up with now. Even on my 7 year-old lappy it performs OK – probably, XFCE or LXDE would be faster, but stuff is still running at reasonable speeds for webbrowsing and text editing and the occasional photo editing job. Also, I don't know what Miekko tried doing, but I don't really have trouble with KDE forgetting my settings all the time.

Also, there is apparently an organization in NY that does pro bono work and can help me get my name changed, and hopefully can tell me how to get my social security administration data updated.
On the downside, I then need to discuss with my security officer why I've submitted name-change paperwork.

I downloaded the forms I need in order to file a name change with the state of NY. Also, drafted a letter to my father. I'm pretty sure he'll take it well, I just feel kind of bad for not talking to him sooner. Also, I'm working on a monogram.
