Yay starting with altgreece <which is much easier to type than pseudo-pelopponesos, or peloponnesos, or pelopponnessoss >

Okay, let's get this ball rolling. I hereby decree that there exists a city called umam in this place.

Sorry about the buggy pages, Torco. They should no longer puke. (The new wiki page code displays a notice when it's empty, and that notice had to be adjusted so it could handle authors without user profiles correctly. All better!)

damnit... okay, I'll make a profile. my post count isn't 1 anymore, so there's no reason not to xD

Blank pages, Torco.

BTW, if no one is interested, I would be happy to jettison non-human races altogether.

yeah... since I tried to make a page and lost it on account of not having a profile I've been working on my local drive. I'll be posting.

Incidentally, I don't much care for alternate species... but I would like it if we were to define the phenotype-ethnicity-race-whatever of the guys in pseudogreece. anyone up for that? <you know, what colour they are, how dolichocephalous, how tall, big or small ears and so on>

I was just thinking about that this morning myself. How about first, do we want this locus to be homogenous, split two ways, or a 3 or more melting pot?

Racewise, you mean ?

Personally I see the most potential for two distinct ethnicities—a population native to the mountains to the north, and maybe a plains or forest-dwelling folk coming up from the south or east.

This name popped into my head this morning: Maldisi, Maldisa, for the/a mountain people(s) and/or tribe. Not sure why, but it sounds quite right.

More on the actual current topic, do we want to build races (I'm just going to run with that as a catch-all term) from scratch, as it were, or copy existing earth types with a tweak or two?

nice. I got a name for the ethnicity of the folks living up in Umam.

Boom!
Umam
<now all we need is some other relevant polity in the region: I mean, who else will conquer my city? Umam needs conquering, guys! someone conquer it!>

Torco, that is a very good article! I look forward to its completion. But, purple walls?? Whence the dye!!

I made some minor changes, mostly fixing typos and ending the sentence about Malasami's great works.

I don't know... there grows a berry in the mountains that can dye things purple?
I suppose it would be kind of cool if the government just called them the purple walls because its all cool and prestigious but only the gates were purple and the rest are an ordinary mud color xD

And thanks, man... I'm exceedingly careless when conworlding, and I didn't have time to proofread it extensively today.
Now, someone conquer it

Does the built-up area/city up by/in the Valley of the Sun have any name distinct from its adjacent-to name?

I imagine the city being called valley of the sun... I haven't given that bit of world any though, though, besides "well, it would look like there would be a town in that valley, wouldn't there" xD

That works!

Possibly it's an area with religious significance, say a/some temple(s), and originally there were just pilgrimage tents...which brought traders to supply the pilgrims, who brought guards to protect themselves, who eventually formalized a relationship with the priesthood and started building more permanent structures for housing trade and defense, all under the ultimate suzerainty of the priests, who had no desire for it to have another official name (though there's certain to be an unofficial one, to distinguish the town from the temple(s)...a worn-down version of Tentward or Marketward (in-language, of course), perhaps?

What if we put some conflict into it? How about it's the Jerusalem of the religion to which the Imperial Cult of Alam is rival to? so it could have been kind of abandoned during the time of Malasami hegemony and then experienced a renaissance during the republic. abandoned cities are awesome.

Whenever I read Jerusalem I hear it being said by Patrick Stewart's King Richard from Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Also I keep reading Malasami as salami (not a complaint, just a comment).

I could see that working out...I wouldn't have it entirely abandoned though (at least not the temples/priesthood). Possibly large sections of the city still abandoned, and several previously less-attended temple complexes be fully abandoned (but also including one of the former main ones, so we can have a nice huge derelict temple complex)?

I should really find something to name "malsalami" <which, in my native lang, means either a salami that is of poor quality, or one that has been naughty>; if it helps, I think of it in my head as ma'la.s:a"mi or ma.la.sa"mi. How about an all-final stress lang, a la french?

I like the notion: a period of religious oppression during which golden valley becomes impoverished and half-abandoned, only old priests and radicals having the nerve to keep living there while everyone else rellocates to nearby Umam to be acculturated. It would make the remaining folk from the valley a strong cultural resentment. Plus, it opens the door for underground ruins!

maybe there could be some sort of religious injuction to not fix the huge derelict temple complex? we could model them on jewishness.
