>>>so I don't want to set a precedent that others would have to work around.
dude, the whole reason i got excited about this proyect was exactly that that would be sort of the meat of it, you know, setting precedents others would have to work around. I mean, the rules read

>>2) Whatever is posted first is canon. So, if Player 1 posts that X is Y and Player 2 later writes that X is Z in a different post, Player 2 will have to edit that post to agree with Player 1.

that tells me the game is to set precedents others will have to work around

I have officialy become disgruntled with this proyect.
=(

I think that was more Smaug not wanting to write something that someone else would think "this is shit, I don't want to have to work around this."

As for myself…dammit I've done shit-all >.>

Well hop to it, people! If something really lousy happens we can always re-negotiate—and there are always other cities/civilizations/cultures.

How can I fix the phonology page to better represent the idea that voiced and unvoiced forms are interchangeable?

I shall be violent and on mere will zu macht decree in a most manly fashion that there exist the following roots in Black Maldisi

Mal- barley. the ancestral name of the River Black delta, and of the noble family that has dominated it since forever, means "land of barley". Little to no barley is grown there anymore but no one seems to mind.
Um- brown.
Am- the kind of soil that's black and well aired. you know, bog earth except with decent drainage. I call it "tierra de hojas"
Al - bring, import or bear something.
Asurma - a kind of puma, with a black and brown spotted pattern to its fur, which typically prowls the shrublands.
Sasi - a sort of funerary urns used in some of the villages in the region around the River Black
Amin - the eternal cycle of death and resurrection, change and renewal.
Hasane - hope for a better tomorrow. a king was once named thusly. it was probably an autonym.
Sar - a human's penis. the root for an animal's penis is Ga
Ga- an animal's penis. the root for a human's penis is Sar

Let it be so, per secula seculorum, amen.

Hey, can I join? I've laid a claim even:

tXOMV6E.png

Oice is the Crimea-shaped island, and Lellytue is the smaller iland next to it.

Rohslor is the name for the mainland and its mountains, and Ktella is the small island near Bahrain few live on.

Uqony is the name of the region itself.

First off, you can't link that url, it's an html page. You have to link the actual image file, http://i.imgur.com/tXOMV6E.png.
Second, we're concentrating on one region at a time, and collaboratively filling that in, building on the work of others, not each taking our own part like in Akana or something.

Cut me a break, y'know eh?

We have no way of keeping track what's a defined and what's undefined, so I can't tell whether posts are free thoughts or SERIOUS CANON. It might go faster we get time/ weather scales and universal area names out of the way by doing them at the same time?

while i welcome more dynamism, as nessie points out we're focusing on this one area in this inner sea. why not virilely create another city near Umam? it would be an exceedingly virile thing to do.

I've never gotten the point of parallel collabs, like... if you're just going to do your thing in your claim then why do it with others? i suspect it's about having people who will read your stuff or something. like read my nanowrimo and i'll read yours circles ?
at any rate, isn't it much more awesome to participate in a collective thingie?

Well to be fair, part of that concept is a) cut down on the overall workload per person for an entire consetting to become relatively detailed (in theory, at least) and b) depending on the setup, see how other's creations interact with yours or even how others expand on your creations.

End of the Malasami dynasty. I would be happy for input and maybe some ideas about external factors which might have made residents of the city restless.

quoting Nessari:

Exactly.

I like it!

The most obvious external factor that could have stirred things up in this period, to my imagination, is trade: I mean palace economies and in general command economies work pretty well in times where trade is not plentiful or safe: just look at, say, the early soviets: international trade was limited and, in that context, they did incredibly well! but when nasty traders start disrupting the nice balance your bureaucrats have figured it all goes to hell. I think that may have been a factor in the success of ancient Egypt's command economy: it's really hard to smuggle stuff in and out of egypt cause you have to go through either the river, which is patrolled, or the desert, which is a horrible place to smuggle through. Or you'd have to go south into like Nubia and up again, in which case Malaria. Similarly, the Tawantinsuyu, which apparently was kind of command economy-ish as well, is located in a mountain range, so you can just have key outposts and control movement of goods. Umam, however, is not such a place: it has lots of coast and a couple navigable rivers, so maybe when other cities developped decent sails and started figuring out that, say, tin was really cheap in Umam, trade started flowing and disrupting the nice palace economy, which refused to acknowledge this because, I don't know, it would have been shameful to acknowledge that the King in his Majesty could be fooled by mere smugglers.

Then again, the smuggling might have been an offensive move by a witty king from elsewhere...

I love the revolution of the potters. maybe pots took on a relevant cultural significance? like, pots are not a symbol of the sleeping power of the silent masses, and revolutionaries break pots the way earth revolutionaries wear phyrgian caps ? pots mean freedom for the people and sedition for the rulers, so rulers only eat in metal plates and amphorae and so on ?

Finally catching up with this after a long glut of work—all of it excellent! I really like the bit about banning most forms of trade within sight of the temples—that could be exceptionally problematic if a temple is tall enough to overlook streets for some miles.

I'd like to propose the architects of the smugglery were from That City On The Island We Keep Talking About, which is probably mineralogically poor since it lacks the mountainy wealth of the lands around Umam. We need a proper rivalry and maybe a few Punic wars.

Here it is!

Since I just made that article, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to also make a page on the language...

Regardless, here's the phonology and orthography I used to make the names in the article:

gwopfas inventory.png
gwopfas phonotactics.png
(Whoops, I guess I forgot to put the vowels into the phonotactics. No weird diphthongy things going on them them, anyway, so it'd just be a simple list of all seven vowels.)

Also, -as and -om are some kind of morphological suffixes or inflections.

You might want to clarify if all words are monosyllabic or not.

Well there's gonna be some monosyllabic words, but there'll also be a lot of polysyllabic words.

Yeah... the string <gwopfas> gave me the distinct impression there were poly words in there
I scanned me eyes over it and it looks nice: will study it more deeply.
