Serves me right for buying an ASUS... my laptop keyboard is all fucked up and it's gonna cost me some 120 bucks to fix it, not to mention the halfway across town trip to the laptop fixing place thing.

Funnily enough, i'm seriously considering re-screening my Asus and putting a 64bit OS on it, to save money.

My 8-year old acer netbook is still mostly running ok, so I have that going for me. Though the wireless card sometimes shuts down for no reason.

the biggest problem this laptop1 has apart from the screen being dead is it has Vista 32bit installed, so it can't use the 4th gig of RAM it has. Even the dvd drive being dead isn't as big a problem2.

I can generally get laptop screens from some Chinese people downtown at 200 bucks or so, i'm sure over in the first world they're cheaper. i think rescreening a laptop is a good idea, and ASUS is a great manufacturer, it's just we get really few ASUS parts here in chile.

omfgwindowsvista.... i feel your pain.

Of course, a "this is the state of the country" image will describe things about the state of the country, isn't it ? suicide rates suggest the gravity of all the other problems.
Plus, is it not true that capitalism *is* associated with higher rates of suicide, with anomie and whatnot?

The pension one is rather stupid, on second glance. You can't have plausibly-funded defined-benefits retirement schemes without a constantly increasing population, which is impossible to guarantee (especially when you have any form of immigration limitation.)

it is just as of-course that politicians will suggest that all the bad things are due to their political opponents, and the bad things will go once their opponents are gone

It might work out with a perfectly stable population, ie birth rates perfectly mirror death rates [edit: or more accurately entry-into-contribution-scheme rates perfectly mirror retirement rates], but that's never going to happen, so not really worth working out the numbers. This is part of the problem (meaning issue which requires solving, not fatal flaw or anything similar) with retirement schemes; defined-benefits work great when you have a young worker glut, but they start to show signs of serious strain and even risk collapsing a couple decades after birth rates fall below replacement (as has happened in damn near1 every industrialized/1st World country.)

So apparently getting a legal name change (in NY) is more involved than I was lead to believe. I don't just need a petition, but also an Application for Judicial Index Number and a Request for Judicial Intervention (in triplicate). To make things worse, these forms don't make any sense, like as in I don't understand what needs to go where.

On the other hand, I took the day off, so I got to have lunch with one of my friends who I haven't really hung out with in a while. So it was ok, overall.

Ugh, my sympathies. Bullshit legal red tape sucks. If it's completely incomprehensible, maybe look up a local trans support system/group/insert term here? If nothing else they'll probably know how to fill those out.

Yay friendlunch!
