Gallifreyan is, as it turns out, profoundly more implausible in design.
I happened to come across this earlier today and thought it deserved a mention here. It may seem a tad plain at first, but it apparently has excellent combinatory behaviour (if you like being visually overwhelmed.)

Yeah, that's sort of a matter of how the pen is used. Depending on the stylistic properties it can also look more Hieriatic. A lot of letters have two forms: one that's more bulky and Egyptian, and a narrower shape that fits the Tolkienian aesthetic better. My ultimate goal is to create something as flexible and flowy as Arabic, but that'll probably require at least one more set of variants for almost all of the letters.
Here's article one of the UDHR in Maja. That's the first three lines, which are in a flourish-y version of the modern alphabet. The fourth line is the first line, but in the traditional alphabet. Too lazy to do the whole thing in the traditional alphabet.
The characters of the traditional alphabet were pulled directly from the ancient Axonian syllabary. This was a political move by the incipient Second Empire to help legitimize itself as the continuation of the First (or Axonian) Empire. The modern forms came about not too long afterwards, because yes, the traditional alphabet is pretty cumbersome.
Here's the problem. You've got two versions, one a descendant of the other. Except writing systems, even with recognized ancient antecedents, go through a huge amount of drift and simplification dozens if not hundreds of variations, before they even become widely used. So your traditional alphabet/syllabary symbols would have really been the starting point of the evolution, not the system found in the heyday of the First Empire, really.
