Universe and Language Management: Planning (2014-02-09 16:05:14) :
Didn't think anyone would try that yet! I guess since nothing's exploded yet, I'll convert over the other old documents.

Translational Faux Pas (2014-02-09 03:11:22) :
There is a famous (sadly, apocryphal) example of early automated translation from English to Russian:

Original: The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak
Should be: дух бодр, плоть же немощна
Came out as: спирт, конечно, готов, но мясо протухло (The vodka is good, but the meat is rotten)

NSFW Pictures (2014-02-09 03:04:38) :
Actually, I found the auto-translated auto-transcribed subtitles were about 40-50% comprehensible. (It is impressive!)

But it's not just forklifts that do stupid lifting tricks:

Universe and Language Management: Planning (2014-02-09 02:12:06) :
Rolled out the Lablog-style Recursive Wiki Pages, which bring edit previews, edit history, file attachments, discussion, and child pages. Still some rough edges—they don't respect floatpics, making floatpics totally useless. (Not sure if a chapter can even find its floatpic without knowing its group?)

Also added Lects/Languages and Language Families. No more shoe-horning everything into wikis/chapters!

Universe and Language Management: Planning :
This is a big topic, so I want to lay out a big long thread here and get input for what people think will be useful and what should be prioritized.

This post will hold the overall plan.

Yes, and let's start with pseudo-Peleponnesos to keep the segregatory effect totally under control.

N.B.—I've started work on language families; they're not ready for use yet though. Don't panic when you see the universe edit interface.

Derivation ideas (2014-02-05 02:21:31) :
In an early episode of Conlangery they discuss the "[style: font-family: monospace]bignum[/style] words for snow in Inuit/Eskimo languages" myth. While this is glossed over, they do go on to mention that at least one language in the general region (I forget which) has a verb-producing affix that, applied to a noun, means "to be freezing in one's ~".

So when you're satisfied with all of the purely functional derivations, you may want to consider something uniquely culture-bound; p...

Then let's do that—we can have a western region, as Hurq outlined, and an eastern region, in the island chain(s) on the other side of the mainland. I dub these pseudo-Peleponnesos and pseudo-Nippon, respectively.

Yeah...

yeah...............

It's inevitable that inset stuff like that (they're called [style:font-family:monospace]float[/style]s in CSS) causes problems with box layouts. You wouldn't think they would, but they do! This is why Wikipedia doesn't float its tables of contents.

I'll rework the layout on news posts to have a bigger header, but there will probably always be at least one way to make ugly box-layout-related messes.

Actually in this case it's just old code—the auto-redirects are kind of a recent thing. The new Recursive Wiki Page template uses them, so after I'm done integrating it, I'll update everything else to follow suit.

Reduplication issues in my conlang (crosspost from blog) (2014-02-05 02:49:58) :
Intuitionalistically, I don't see a problem with it; there are lots of examples of systems where affixes can (appear to) have inverse effects on words just because you provide a different root. "Inflammable" is a great English example of this—a naïve English speaker will assume it means "not flammable."

Given that, I think this is actually a really natural problem for a language to have, and it would probably be solved by memorizing individual words from context. Over time, I bet the bo...

A Flat Universe (2014-02-05 02:32:30) :
I think I get it—though it's a bit tricky. The toroidal explanation, while topologically accurate, is probably going to confuse a lot of people. Did you ever get around to drawing that diagram?
