The in-place word addition sounds nice; once the new Notes system is implemented that should be easy.
While graphical editors are popular, they are an immense amount of work to implement and maintain, especially for markup languages other than native HTML. I recommend getting a basic HTML editor (such as [http://www-archive.mozilla.org/editor/|Mozilla Composer]) and then search-replacing angle and square brackets.
