Switching Fonts (2014-03-13 19:19:02) :
Granted, Gill Sans probably doesn't cover much Unicode. Is there a standard, OK-looking font that comes with OSX and that has OK coverage at least of the various Latin code areas and IPA that could be set as a fallback font? I'm not gonna install an ugly font nobody's ever heard of just because Zontas uses a Mac.

Segoe UI is probably still better than Linux Libertine regarding Unicode coverage, though. As much as I love LiLi otherwise.

Also! Unless you @font-face include fonts (e.g. from Google Fonts or commercial services such as Adobe Typekit), your browser will only be able to use fonts that are installed on your very own hard drive. Since most people these days use Windows 7 and Office 2010, Segoe UI is a rather safe bet. Websites do not usually submit fonts otherwise. Where they do, ...

Segoe UI comes with MS Office 2007 and newer, and probably also with Windows Vista and newer. On the other hand, what the heck is Quivira and where do I get that from?!

Alternatively, you could dynamically load posts as you scroll up or down with some jQuery magic, like Twitter does. However, at least on my 6 years-old computer, this is also what makes Twitter slow as a snail.

Reduplication issues in my conlang (crosspost from blog) (2014-02-05 04:22:27) :
Well yeah, I thought that rather than scrapping those irregularly reduplicated or zero-derived adjectives, they're just there as irregularities, and get registered in the dictionary as such already anyway.

This is the list that I mentioned on IRC yesterday. Unfortunately, Gary Shannon's site doesn't exist anymore – fortunately, it's been backed up by the Waybackmachine, however:

Um, of course you're allowed to comment if you like. And actually, I'd like to know if what I pointed out towards the end (nouns: reduplication = diminutive; adjectives: reduplication = essentially augmentative; adjectives are nouny) strikes anyone as particularly unnatural or otherwise very problematic.

Reduplication issues in my conlang (crosspost from blog) :
Ayeri uses reduplication for a number of things, because reduplication is a nice feature. Says the Grammar on this topic (§ 3.2.3):
It is used for hortatives, to indicate that something is done again, and it is used to form diminutives of nouns.
There are two patterns listed for verbs, one with complete reduplication of the imperative verb form for hortative statements, and one with partial reduplication as a way to express that an action takes place again, i.e. some ...
