Catalonian Greek Scratchpad (2016-07-09 01:36:46) :
An initial comment:
What accounts for the 2nd declension masc. nom. pl. becoming a front rounded vowel in <acilpö> but a front unrounded vowel in <ántrube>? Stress?
Looking forward to more! Especially loads more third-declension nouns. Third-declension is where all the fun's at.

Catalonian Greek Scratchpad :
Mostly a paradigm/vocab dump until the diachronics are finalized. (Can we get the lovely [cols] tags they have on the Zeeb?)
Nouns
Dative and accusative merge as the oblique, with the dative forms dropping (thus neuters only have two cases, mȧsc/fem have three). Dual is dropped. Catalonian Greek has a stress accent derived from the location of the pitch accent, much like actual Modern Greek, with the added complication that word-final vowels drop if the accent was on the...

ARE WE DOING A GROUPLEARN? (2016-07-06 16:55:25) :
Nesescosac/Yatalac and dhok already declared the grouplearn dead two days ago, before it even began.
Therefore I've decided to go for plan B: study Russian with miekko.
Thank you very much for your initial interest.

I'm interested.
I'd vote for Quechua, just because it seems like the langauge that would be easiest to find resources on, and it's as interesting to me as any of the others.

Also re: Quechua:
Consider Bolivia's promotion of Quechua culture under Evo Morales.

FSI is your best bet for a lot of African languages: Fula, Hausa, Chinyanja, Kirundi, Kituba, Lingala, Moré, Shona, Luganda, Swahili, Igbo and Twi all have FSI courses. (As does Amharic, but that doesn't really count.) I'd be down for an African language- always wanted to dabble in something with tone. We could do Fula, though- while not tonal, it's still got more than enough nuttiness to please my inner tryhard.

In order, my preferences are:
1) Mapudungun
2) Guaraní
3) Aymara
4) Quechua
not that I wouldn't want to do Quechua, I'd just like to do the others more.
But you are certainly right that African languages are cool. Kinyarwanda or Fula would be my votes, but Akan is cool too. But again, resources.

Also, because African languages are cool and I have more interest in them, I want to throw out Xhosa and Akan and Zulu. But because I don't want to be a thorn in everyone's sides, I won't push any of them unless someone else would be interested in considering one of them over the other four in the running.

I think my preferences are:
1) Quechua
2) Mapudungun
3) Guaraní
4) Aymara
But we should maybe pool together what we can find in terms of resources before choosing a language. Maybe I'll do a little bit of that tomorrow myself and post here.

I'm with Zayk on this one, which is why I'm thinking of one of the larger/better supported South American languages. I think our four options really are Quechua, Aymara, Guaraní, and Mapudungun, and of those it was mentioned how difficult it was to find resources for Guaraní.
Personally, my votei s for Mapudungun, but I'm fine with whatever y'all pick.
