Added a confirmation page before forum post deletion as per halcyon's request.

I think H13 has made a pretty good argument for tags at this point. I'll proceed with a hybrid tag field that automatically recognizes and removes # signs unless someone comes up with a big complaint. This should, I hope, help cut down on noise when performing a search.

...and if hashtags are really so evil, we can call them octothorpetags or poundtags or something.

If we are going to have tags we should have Tumblr-style tags, so we can tag things with arbitrary strings without cluttering up the content of the post with hashtags.

quoting Hallow XIII:
the benefits of tagging lie in collecting posts where the word in question is not contained or encapsulated in a string that is not conducive to search, but that is relevant to the topic (example: posts on physics often do not contain the string "physics", and posts on e.g. Kalmyk are about mongolic languages even if they will tend to not include this word)

This is a reasonable argument; however, if we are to have this, my strong suggestion is that we do not make the system independent of searching  - that is, any search should turn up both post contents and any tags on the post. This way, nobody has to add tags for words that are already otherwise in a post; then someone posting about Japanese pronouns, say, need not additionally tag it with #Japanese and #Pronouns because those words are (for the sake of argument) already in the post, they need merely tag anything else it might be relevant to that isn't explicitly mentioned.

the search ought to let you select between words, tags or both; otherwise, benefit 2 would be lost!

I'd like to declare that I've fixed the "jump-to-first-unread-post" mechanic for forum threads. Bugs quashed:

1. It would jump to an offset only showing you the first unread post at the bottom, requiring you to go to the next page to read the rest. Now, it shows you as many unread posts as possible—without overshooting the first unread post.

2. Even if you'd never read the first post in a thread, it would jump to the first reply. Now it knows about the original post!

By popular demand, I bring you custom locations. These are also saved in your posts, so everyone will be able to know what state of mind you were in and what conworld you were working on when you said that one embarrassing thing that one time.

I guess, yay for those few of us that have IPv6. Or just want to fill in something else than our real whereabouts.

Implemented a new front page. Gods how I hated that old one. It's archived here so you can see how bad it was.

I approve of the front page. Small problem: the online users section is p fugly when more than two people are on. Align by avatar maybe?

I'd like to propose that somebody be nominated Trivia Janitor so that certain people don't plaster it full of everything they get from their Snapple caps. It ought to be exclusively site things and con-trivia, otherwise it will get out of hand.

There has been a minor mishap with avatar sizes.

Further aesthetic proposal: align user avatars and words (i.e. "Newest" and "Online Now" ) on the same side. This should help against a possible Rubik's Cube Mess impression.

The avatars of the Newest User and the rightmost Online Users are misaligned; the former is farther to the right.

All I'm going to say is load up the front page on a phone. Ok that's not all I'm going to say, I'll also say (on a desktop) I do like the new layout.

Two linebreaks following a [/quote] tag will now be collapsed down into one. Because no one needed to see that.

I've also added some rudimentary hacks to make tables less likely to create plaques of linebreaks, but they're far from comprehensive. It's enough to fix Nort's example above, at least, which I think will be the most common encounter.

the search feature works funny

you do a search for some word and it will find you a list of posts containing that word, but then when you click through to any of them you are taken to a blank page with just that post on it
i guess i am used to what the phbb search is like on the other board where your search results will take you to the thread showing you that post in context
as it is i can turn up a result in THIS thread but then i have no inkling as to who replied to that post and how, unless I then click through the pages of the thread one by one to find the post where it occurs

oh also the emoticons here aren't doing it for me, wouldn't it be better if we make them kind of a puke-grey-green and make their expressions really indistinct from one another??
