Gender

One of the first things in Mhra society that would strike somebody from Earth as strange is the institution of the 3rd gender (Mhra stoñh [ˈstóŋ]). These people, stongs (for whom I'll use the Spivak pronouns, if referring to an individual), usually take the role of craftsmen. They're distinguished by a peculiar dressing style, and usually have medium-length hair.
However, on a further glance it turns out that the Mhraic institution of gender is in itself unfamiliar by virtue of being deeply intertwined with the (culturally) mandatory initiation rites. These initiation rites are usually freely chosen by the initiates, though there is a social expectation for people to choose the same initiation rite as one of their parents. They, however, bind a person into a certain occupation for life, and also bestow a gender on them, since non-initiates are genderless. Biological sex is not given much weight in general, not even in courtship - if a pair is of the same biological sex and want children, they usually find a surrogate mother and/or father, with this role often being taken by one of their friends.

Symbolics

The triskelion

One of the most widespread Mhraic symbols is the straight triskelion. It is nowadays considered to be a representation of Mhraic society, with each "leg" representing each gender. It is thus often used by the Mhra Empire, often called "the Empire of the Triskelion". It was also adopted by many of the surrounding people including the Southern Boorkhodics (e.g. Vaasagch), Thangaith, and many of the Northern Southern people, such as the Langley. Many Mountain Gandrip people do not use it and instead identify with their Mountains subgroup, i.e. Kitai or Bodog. Other Mountain Gandrip people (and some Mountains people), however, use the triskelion in addition to Mountains cultural symbols.
