Featherscales look more like fluffy dinosaurs than birds. They are basically sentient deinonychus with prehensile hands instead of wing-things.
Their spoken language is nothing but toneme. It is technically musical... but since their language are meant to convey information instead of sounding nice, featherscale language sounds very cacophonic to terran ears.
Featherscales are hermaphrodite. They don't have wombs but they have pouches similar to seahorses. Featherscales used to practice infanticide by exposure. Basically, once a year a tribe leaves their hatchlings in a remote pen outside their village and checked back a week later. Cannibalism invariably occurs, leaving only the strongest one to survive. The featherscale then raise the survivors communally. Before the Revolution the humans and beastmen doesn't really care about these practice.
After the Revolution, the Federation decided to brought the featherscales into a "civil society" and introduce them to modernity. This has an effect of making featherscales familial structure less communal and resembles the nuclear-family structure common among the federationists.

They believe that a person's soul is absorbed into their surrounding after they died. For this reason, they perform funerary cannibalism. They also make clothes and accessories from the skin and bone of the deceased.
Featherscale architecture has two distinct features in them. The first one is the lack of wall. Even after the Federation introduced advanced building technique, their buildings were only delimited by traceries and handrails. Humans and beastmen ambassador who are used to the privacy granted by walls has to erect curtains around their airy room. The second features address the problem of stray animals wandering in, since their settlements are usually located in the middle of the forest. Basically, they use raised platform to make stilthouses.
