–ens, [ens], suf. Passive root.
usage:
Used to derive roots with a passive sense, from themes. Example: od– "smell, odour" + –ens (passive) → odens– "to smell like, to stink; aroma, flavour, scent, stench". Put it in contrast with odlo– "to smell, to sniff; smell, odour", which is the active version of theme od–.
Sometimes it appears as ins–, showing its tendency to close the /e/ into /i/ in its evolution towards Mdh. It shows, as well, the metathetic variant nes–, nis–.
