Diplomacy- Summer Edition (2014-06-18 04:59:50) :
H, that map is nigh illegible. It would surely help everyone if fleets and armies were more visually distinct - and probably a larger text size too? My vision may be worse than average, but it's still sufficient that I can tell some people will be having to squint and look closely to be sure of what they're seeing. (It might be sufficient if the map image were simply enlarged to 150% or 200%.) The diplomacy aspect of Diplo is surely sufficiently difficult - it doesn't also need visual obfuscatio...

Diplomacy- Summer Edition (2014-06-13 16:09:24) :
What I said is true, but at the same time I'm now feeling all "aww, but I wike dipwo :( :(" and trying to think of some way to be in without being in. So, I can at least offer myself as a backup player if someone will have to miss a season or two due to summer outings or the like - on the condition that I can actually talk to them before doing it, so that I can fill in properly. (I do not offer to send blind orders on behalf of derelicts.) I would also be happy to post some newspaper headlines a...

Diplomacy- Summer Edition (2014-06-12 19:06:32) :
I have previously offered to host next time, but the way this summer is shaping up I don't think that would be a good idea (nor would it be a good idea for me to play). I have been insanely busy (by my standards, anyway) for several months and I do not foresee this changing anytime soon. I would miss hell of deadlines.

This dark theme: thank you! Now I can safely browse Anthologica in the two hours before bed, knowing it is not blasting my retinas with melatonin-suppressing light.

I'm not sure those maps count as useful, but they are at least mildly interesting.

happiness thread (2014-05-29 16:52:13) :
Errr, are you aware of what distension means? I presume you were trying to say "lack of sexual tension", but in English the morphology doesn't break down that way: distension is the nominalization of "to distend", i.e. to swell or inflate by pressure from within. So 'sexual "distension" can only mean having a raging hard-on. :D A better word for what you were trying to say might be "sexual contentment".
Am I the only one who didn't miss the 'edit type buttons are a serious pain to implement' part?

I'm curious to see what Sam whips up without them; they may turn out to not be necessary.
Maybe not - but if the problem is the typing of edits as a general feature, surely it wouldn't be necessary? For example, there could just be two versions of the "submit" button, one which does that button already does, plus another (for major edits) which also does whate...

Bugs, Requests, and Changes (2014-05-21 20:40:20) :
The issue with minor edits isn't just the question of having noise in the WHAT'S NEW signal, but also that I'd rather not have every last little action I take put front and center? I don't necessarily want rough drafts of things put in everyone's face before I'm ready to put them there myself - nor articles that I work on piecemeal over the course of months with hundreds of little edits (this being my most usual mode of work).

Not to mention if I fix an embarrassing freudian typo I'd m...

Bugs, Requests, and Changes (2014-05-20 21:01:08) :
H13, I agree, but if we're to have such a feature I'd want a way to make sure only significant updates to things show up. I certainly wouldn't want the WHAT'S NEW feature to list every last picky little edit I've made. Perhaps the form when you submit content should have a "this is a minor edit" checkbox?
Added a tool tip to ranks that tells you when the next rank is. Sufficient?
Request for ideas: redesigning forum posts (2014-05-10 16:11:24) :
The point was that there's no way to see the rank threshholds. When will I become hydrogen? There is no way to see the postcount that that will happen at.
the benefits of tagging lie in collecting posts where the word in question is not contained or encapsulated in a string that is not conducive to search, but that is relevant to the topic (example: posts on physics often do not contain the string "physics", and posts on e.g. Kalmyk are about mongolic languages even if they will tend to not include this word)
This is a reasonable argument; however, if we are to have this, my strong suggestion is that we do not m...
