A forum game that takes advantage of Atlas' wikis seems to be in order. I propose Forumworld. I will set up a wiki, and anyone who wishes may contribute articles to it. There are only a few rules:
1) You may not add more than one article at a time; if you put one up, you have to wait for someone else to post something before going back. You may, however, continue to edit the article unless the content you want to add violates rule 2.
2) Whatever is posted first is canon. So, if Player 1 posts that X is Y and Player 2 later writes that X is Z in a different post, Player 2 will have to edit that post to agree with Player 1.
3) Anyone can edit posts for spelling and style, but they can't change the substance of the post unless they are the original author.
4) You may not write articles on the same series of subjects consecutively. That means that you can't write about Language X, then its daughter Y, then some other language. Diversify!

Some basic facts:

1) There is no magic, period.
2) Humans are the dominant race on the planet (90-95% of the world population). However, people do like having other races, so there will be two. What these races are like is up to the players, but whoever gets to them first can only create one. Their articles will be the only ones which can have new information put in them by non-OPs so long as they don't add anything that violates rule 2.
3) Posts about geography, climate, etc are exempt from rule 4 because that stuff is HARD and I wouldn't mind if some interested party were to do the heavy lifting in that department.
4) The technology level may be bronze age of 16th century, it's up to you, the people (first three posters get to pick which of the two, majority wins).

Forumworld can now be found here.

To start off, how about simply taking the planet's geography from late Devonian Earth? Or, and this is not to be an ass-kisser, but I liked the continent you cooked up on some other forum, Torco. Would you be down with loaning it to us and positioning it?

I volunteer myself as tribut... or. Contributor.

Technologically, I'd like to throw in a vote for earlier times. Simpler times. Bronze age or classical.

Classical has been done to death. By bronze age I mean palace economies mooching off of a handful of more enterprising societies, not togas and clockwork calendars.

I was thinking Minoan or Homeric, if it helps.

Sure! I'd have to rotate it and play around with the shape a bit, so as to differentiate it in my mind from the one over at the CCC, but okay, sure
[Maybe I'll get around to producing a map and throwing it this way... the continent from the CCC really works best as a britan-sized island than as an afroeurasia]

Minoans? Pre-classical Sword and Sandal sounds awesome! I'd also suggest the tawantinsuyu, the akkadians, the egypt's middle kingdom, the indus valley civ... you know, a 2000-1500 BCE vibe. I'm down with that!  <which, I gather, means its settled ? >

Also, Sam: I love the "half a day ago" thing.

I'd go with Homeric myself.

Pretty sure it does. All those plus stealing from the Hittites, western European Megalithic cultures, and Shang China, we've got more than enough inspiration to pull from.

BOOM
I was going to post something, but then I realized I can't edit the wiki.

ALAS! ALL IS LOST!
DOOM IS UPON US!
can you guys edit the forumworld wiki thing? cause if you can, its probably because my profile is funky.

Nope, can't edit it. Maybe you could throw a few random symbols in your profile now? xD

Well, if it won't allow me to edit the wiki then there's hardly reason to, is there?
Plus, I rather enjoy the board charminly insisting I've only made one post, even with abundant evidence to the contrary. On compensation for this most obscene and shameful eccentricity I present this thread with a map!

Ok it was worth a shot trying to get you to put something in there xD  We can't edit it because Smaug hasn't changed the group settings yet. Once that happens it should be editable.

I blame Rhetorica for this wiki travesty and will talk to her about it. EDIT: Maybe I am the one to blame? EDIT: Problem solved, you all have access and can edit away.

Torco, the continents look squarish, if we're going to fiddle with nature a bit surely we can improve it a bit more?

Any objections to the map?

Maybe, I don't know... I think it looks fine, but then again I would wouldn't I ?

They don't look squarish to me. They're not the most easily geologically-justifiable, but I'm a huge map/geology geek and it's really not too bad. 10/10 would approve again

yauch.. that Y thing looks hideous! u___u

I better go to bed now before I start fiddling with it like a teenager who just discovered her clit

That looks much better when projected onto a sphere. My only remaining gripe is this island:

pHEE0tj.png

Could it be rotated just a little so it's not at a perfect right angle to the rest of the archipelago?

The mountain on the main continent? Eh, maybe lower it a bit and bend the top prongs of the Y in different ways, it'll be fine. Maybe curve the left spine upwards, and rotate the right's base about 45° east, then meander it a bit. #backseatcartography

Yeah that could do with a bit of an adjustment. *tries, sorta makes it happen but doesn't know enough about GIMP to make it actually happen, which is different for some reason* Squished the center top, bowed the south coast out to match the arc the eastern islands establish better, and horizontally squished it so it didn't cover anything else up. Looked decent, too...then I tried to save the changes and GIMP reverted everything o_O
It'd look really good if there was a very slight reverse esh bend to it, like ʅ rotated 100 (or a tad higher) degrees.

I tried to give it an eshbend but my photoshop skillz failed me. I also gave it frozen poles, because ice is nice and someone might want to give the world some aleutians. And fuck the Y thing. gargantuan plains for the win! [maybe there ought to be some lakes or something there, but I imagine that since its smack dab in the middle of the equator, the huge continent would probably have some jungles. and savannas.... I should revisit the Church of Climatology.
Dat%20Map.png

Also equator and so on and so on.

yes, the southeastern continent from that perspective is totally north-south... but so is Chile, so its totally realistic <and I MEANT to do is, it isn't something I just realized at all>
