THREAD UN-HIJACK

This is now the Jalvaan poetry thread.

Here is a (very, very tentative) fragment from the lay of Seaven, in which, after the crazed old woman Kóváiyon convinces him to massacre a village of innocents for political gain, the sole survivor tells his grandson of the deed.

JalvaanEnglish
Te vannán váhvár, te vanád véla,
Valkkaa veltínn váén hátáht?
Hoorén hóyóg, héškoe harrir,
Hádát áangmár, hesté fálkáht.

Berím yát bándin, tuvaaht ei ményá
Malág, mánvat, yó! Máyhaltím,
Yádváé palkaa yálmáraa yuhák.
Biít, éstann vǒth Táhvárgan.

Fíía féyaá féndat vánád, áaté ein!
Te láhaá fiiú láéfašt, lyát,
Šayétán šéerté, šáhtoe vyáth,
Askáánáth, sáqaštá yállma, fáuté!
Come do the fires, come does the night,
What good is it to mourn the passed?
Alive their slayer, extinguisher of the line,
Enemy of the house, who defiled their lands.

We saw his cunning, the zeal he then
Displayed, a fanatic's, woe! We witnessed,
The howling of the beast rang in our ears.
He burnt, Tahvarga judged the victims.

The time of your kin's revenge will come, await it!
As the hours pass, slowly,
To the sky pray, the memory of your wronging,
Your purpose, the fulfillment of your days, remember!

...Moving H13's stuff here because, seriously, I'm planning on writing enough of a literary canon in Lilitika that it really would need a whole thread (if not a frickin' forum.)

that is probably a good idea in retrospect but I am not in favor of egothreads (and I will not write a literary canon of that size any time soon) so I will rename this thread

Fat blades covered by handkerchiefs.
Their iron gives way to rusted bronze below.
Their decorum gives way to vulgarity.
They stand above all, silent and still.
They have seen our whole history,
and they will see our whole future.
They are our home.

Man, I love scripts that are dense and don't use a bunch of spaces.
You guys should do recordings, I'd love to hear the proper meter and nuance of these.

More song than poetry, but whatever.

I am here, sitting in the forest
I am here, I am under the tree
I am under the moon and sun

the sun always burns me
the great tree always protects me
the animals are all around
the noise goes through my mind
all I can do is sit

the moon soothes me
the tree lifts me
the animals are hidden
most of them sleep silently
I can hear the words

More an hymn1 than a poem, dedicated to Idachi2, the Megadelanian god of chance, luck and fortune, mathematics, poetry and music, and of mythology and history. Son of Ide and twin brother of Rianame.

Dèus, deu n'Ide
Dondoneig, Marn Ninsu
Tou na lliscenor,
Adui dui, assagany-mis,
Assarva’ig adui, ī Tassi
È donra’ig ī aget arir
Te dartam man ses rudes, sam dam
Gem-eu man is rom na darle, sam dam
Lhasa se mandre laie, en cerdane,
Ī aget don ramatz eranç gei

Hail, son of Ide
Welcome, Great Boy
Full of light,
Here now, leading us,
Make your way here, at Tassi
And rejoice in this ode,
Which we strike on the strings, as we
Blend it with the sound of pipes, as we
Chant our song, standing round,
In this well-walled altar of yours

Five notes repeated thirteen times? Please tell me Sinemi civilization was obliterated by someone else achieving a cultural victory. I'm digging the imagery, Matrix, but the musical setting deserves to be sunk to the bottom of the ocean. ... At least twice. I also think you may have tortured syllable stress a bit too much to fit your verse; assuming the macrons indicate stress, those words simply don't fit that rhythm very well. (Of course, no one's stopping you from constructing a scansion-ignorant or scansion-avoiding culture, but... well...)

Izo, how much Haiku have you read? I can't help but feel that Issa wouldn't have left such a poem as that unaccompanied by others, or at least a clever punning.

The macrons are for length, not stress. Normal stress in Imperial Sinemi is root-final. The repetition of the same notes is supposed to be for the purpose of entering an altered state. Kind of a meditative thing? It's not uncommon to hear a Sinemi humming the tune while focused on some task. It's also used to calm oneself down. Having a common cultural practice for such is very useful in a world where heightened emotions can rip open holes in the fabric of reality, letting loose the wild energies of the spirit world.

(Also, most of Simemi cultural effort is spent on fancy hats )

edit: made it better (and probably ruined ser's poem in relation to mine, sorry ser)
