Rather harder translation challenges than the other thread can go here. First up:

Approximate translation:

Tell me Muse, that man of great ingenuity, who wandered
so much, after he took the sacred citadel of Troy;
of many peoples he saw the cities, their spirit he knew;
many pains, he, through the great sea suffered in his spirits,
doing to win his breath and the return of the party he led;
but the companions he didn't save, despite desiring it,
since all of them get lost because of their own madness,
the foolish! that the cows of the Sun, the son of the Height,
they ate; and the god took them off the day of the return.
Talk about it, daughter of Zeus, from wherever you want, to us also.

The Lord of the Rings' Ring Poem, Hellesan version.

Three Rings for the Elven-kings    under the sky,

I don't agree, since it doesn't really make sense to have the original thread for sentences so short only. The original intention, in fact, was to put there texts like Odyssey and Rings as well as shorter things.

I will still put texts like those two in the original thread, so there are no surprises regarding this issue, people. Things like, say, the translation of an entire book chapter is the kind of text I would post here.

Concerning really long texts, like the entire translation of The Prince I'm doing, I'll just post them in new, separate, threads (with more reason if there are glosses and pronounciation sections, since that would mean pages and pages).

Well, no, they're not simply longer; you made an attempt at preserving the metre of the text (and so should anyone translating them), which is an added challenge; by contrast we haven't been taking the syllable constraints on the haiku very seriously. (I'm also pretty sure the sentence structure in the Odyssey intro is comparable to Nessari's original quotation of Anguipes.)

But by all means, do continue to make whole separate threads for big projects like that. I'm definitely still going to fill up my Prose & Poetry thread, despite planning to do these things here.

It's a matter of how long is a text, not if the text itself is hard to translate (for example, I didn't do certain haikus because they were hard for me to translate into Hellesan due to lack of lexic, and lack of certain tenses.

Regarding Odyssey I really didn't keep the metre of the original version; it's just that I chose the correct words so the verses have, more or less, the same length as in the original and, in most of the verses, the arrangement of tonic an atonic syllables goes parallel with the original. But that's more a matter of personal skills than translation difficulty.
Obviously not everyone has conlangs with lexicons so large or complete as to freely choose among synonyms and fit the needs of the metre but, afterall, translation challenges are -in part- for that: to expand and improve our conlangs' lexicons. Consider translat-o-matic that kind of thread, since for basic and short sentences we already have the fluency threads.

"Tell me, O Muse, of the many-travelled man,
who was driven many ways after he had sacked the sacred citadel of Troy.
Many were the men whose cities he saw and of whose mind he learned,
and many the pains he suffered in his heart upon the sea,
seeking to save his own soul and the return of his comrades.
Yet even so he did not save his comrades, though he desired it sore,
for through their own blind folly they perished—
fools, who devoured the cattle of Helios Hyperion;
but he took from them the day of their returning.
Of these things, goddess, daughter of Zeus, beginning where you will, tell also us."

Tadaa! The gloss may be somewhat silly because I mostly did it from memory (especially about some of the deponent verbs) but I can't find any grave errors in it. Text and translation were both (mostly) copied from Perseus, glossing and desillification of the translation by me. NB: the guy taking away the return is Helios, not Odysseus.

That translation did not aim to maintain the meter of the original, but just to do it required adding a whole bit of new vocabulary. I also had to change the word order from the original significantly just to have grammatical Thote; I had an earlier version thereof which was closer to the original in word order but which was entirely ungrammatical.
