I often notice the west coast seems to conserve /iː/ where I'd expect an unstressed vowel to be (particularly in front of nasals)—but every time I bring this up it seems to be more spotty and isolated.

In my experience, if someone says "I need to use the washroom" when they're at home it's an attempt to be polite. Washrooms seem like inherently more formal places than bathrooms.

EDIT: Also, if Cascadia secedes, we're donating southern Alberta back to Texas. To [i]hell[/i] with ...

When I decided to criticize the paper for that, I meant to suggest specifically that other things can cause the collapse of a civilization—surely, for example, the Eastern Roman Empire is generally regarded as a victim of invasion and political decay rather than resource exhaustion. I guess it requires a very over-broad definition of "civilization", one that includes any adiabatic system of resources... which basically means that the entire world, excluding uncontact...

For what it's worth I work with a number of different distros; Annie runs on OpenSUSE, girlfriend swears by Arch, SciNet is all CentOS (ironic as it sounds for a major supercomputer to use a genericized distro, they don't exactly need off-site sup...

We don't have flats here. They're apartments, even over in crazy Cascadia land which is not really part of Canada so much as its own thing.

...I admit sometimes I want to move there. But then I think about the housing prices and decide I do not want to move there.
