[no_emote]<Whimemsz> "A joke dated c. AD 400, recently translated from Greek, shows similarities to the Parrot sketch. It was written by Hierocles and Philagrius and was included in a compilation of 265 jokes titled Philogelos: The Laugh Addict. In the Greek version, a man complains to a slave-merchant that his new slave has died. The slave-merchant replies, "When he was with me, he never did any such thing!"[9]"

<guitarplayer> ever since I returned from Canada I've preferred tapwater
<guitarplayer> because you don't usually get carbonated water in America it seems
<guitarplayer> so after months of drinking tapwater, I just stuck with it
<guitarplayer> since the tapwater here is reasonably good

On words, lexicons and etymologies (2019-02-14 13:07:36) :
Easy, if they're connected globally through fast trade: flu season.

Otherwise maybe it's bad luck to take bodies out of the morgue until it's past a certain date. The date can be connected to a fable. Not the healthiest idea, keeping bodies around, but still...

Third option: a ceremony can only occur in early autumn, such as a rite of maturity or a challenge of succession, that tends to leave behind a lot of bodies.

Narrative themes and tropes (2019-02-11 14:25:42) :
On the trope of eating alien species in fantasy and science fiction (us included).

[box]Science fiction is full of sickening ideas, like body snatchers and alien parasites and mind-controlling earworms. But one of the most skin-crawling tropes in science fiction is also probably pretty realistic: humans eati...

On :
Contrary to what it states in the map, "qu" is used in native German words: quer "across", quälen "torture, excruciate", quietschen "squeak", quieken "squeal", quetschen "crush, squeeze", Quatsch "nonsense", Quark "Cottage cheese" (ok, the last one is ultimately a loan from a West Slavic *tvarg, but it's long gone native).

On Early Conlang Development (2019-02-01 19:16:52) :
If what you want is to figure out how archaic words or roots evolve into vocabulary that's fine, this is a thing most people do to some extent. But you ask for the ways we take when developing our conlangs in the early stages and, well, in my case it really depends on what I want to do with the language in question. Most of my conlangs are artlangs, and the main purpose concerning vocabulary is to create words with a certain, specific aesthetics that make up the language's flavour, or soul if yo...

On Early Conlang Development (2019-02-01 15:36:55) :
I think if you zealously stick to growing a conlang from roots, the result will invariably be an unwieldy kitchen sink of diachronics with no cohesion, simply because you can't really emulate the nuances, connotations, and settling that would manifest in a real population of speakers over a long period of time. So, supplement with some kind of vision. Sindarin and Quenya come to mind—they do have big sections of vocabulary that Tolkien built forward, from roots, but these were practicable becaus...
